B. 1994 in Newcastle upon Tyne UK, Tom Leslie graduated from the Industrial Design program at Northumbria Newcastle School of Design in 2016. Having gained experience during study at Deadgood UK (2014) and Normann Copenhagen DK (2015), Tom went on to complete his furniture cabinetmakers apprenticeship with Nick James (2017/18).

“My focus is rooted in material and process exploration, driven by a desire to extract the values of materiality, experience and overall usefulness in everyday objects. To me, a really good product shows itself as it is. I believe the emphasis of any design should not be defined by superfluous attributes, but more so the opportunities, experiences and affordances that designed objects can stimulate.”

Experience & Awards
Furniture Cabinetmaker at Nick James, UK (2016-18). A variety of traditional and specialist joinery projects, including household furniture and bespoke commercial fit-outs. This experience has developed a highly proficient workshop skill set, as well as an extensive understanding of material, process and manufacture; invaluable to my practise as an industrial designer.

John Lewis Award (2016). In search of atmosphere was recognised as part of a collection of eight new 'designs to watch' at the new designers exhibition 2016. Judging comments - "An exciting exploration into the way that we interact with the world (and objects) around us. A simple idea that raises a lot of questions and has a great deal of wider potential."

Heal's discovers (2016). In search of atmosphere selected as a Heal's discovers 'ones to watch' product under the 2016 catalogue.

Northumbria University Design Exhibition (2016). New designer’s exhibition at Business Design Centre, London. Responsible for the coordination of the brochure, stand design + logistics for the degree show.

Normann Copenhagen, DK, Internship (2015). Normann Copenhagen is an internationally renowned Danish furniture company, designing and manufacturing an extensive range of furniture and household products. My time was spent working with in-house design and engineering team. Work included design development and iteration, CAD drawings for manufacture and prototype modelling. A collection of these projects are now in production. Working with international colleagues in a fast paced studio has developed a confident, patient approach when engaging with others; listening and responding effectively to the task at hand.

Deadgood LTD, UK, Internship (2014). Deadgood is a multidisciplinary studio, designing and manufacturing a collection of British made contract furniture. My time working with the team offered great insight into the commercial furniture market. Responsibilities included design development for the 2015 product range, marketing and print content for Clerkenwell London 2014, manufacturer visits and general day to day studio runnings.

EDT Engineering Scheme (2012). A sustainable energy project for rural farmers in less economically developed countries. From product development to testing, our final presentation and report finished 5th of 40 projects.

A love for the sea, I enjoy the occasional surf or a quick dip. Keeping busy is a must and has led to a strong interest in both making and fixing things, whether this be on our 1998 300dti Landrover Defender or a vintage British steel framed racing bike. Nothing beats a good summers evening out on the fixed gear.
